Sociologist Ray Oldenburg spent his career studying where community actually happens. His answer: not at home, and not at work.
Home is your first place. Work is your second. A 3rd Space is everything else — the recurring place you return to on purpose, not because you have to, but because it's yours. A bowling league. A dance floor. A table full of people who show up for the same game every week.
Oldenburg's research found that real third places share the same handful of traits: they're neutral ground, they level the playing field regardless of who you are outside that place, and conversation — not the activity itself — is the real point.
Most adults had this automatically in school. Almost none of us do by default once it ends. That gap is the actual reason making friends gets so hard as an adult — not a personal failing, a structural one.
Why I Do This
3rd Space Consulting exists because I built my social life with no guidance from anyone.
I grew up in an emotionally abusive household, only allowed to leave the house for school (e.g., regular, Saturday, and STEM summer enrichment programs), piano practice, or band practice. I was never taught or given many opportunities to be social in a way that fit my needs.
I didn't just fix that by reading about it. I fixed it by looking within, understanding my strengths, and picking nearby 3rd Spaces that I thought would be a good fit for me. And it turns out, most of them were. It took me 33 years, but I finally figured it out. Read my full story →
